LIGHTING & BACKGROUND
💡Soft Lighting
- Use natural & soft light from left or right, If the light is hash (ex. direct sunlight), use a diffuser or paper to well diffuse the light. On the opposite side of the light source, use a whiteboard, or a reflector to reduce the strong shadow
- In the case of natural light is impossible, use the same setting but with an external continuous light source (Never use smartphone flashlight), try to find a lighter background, plate, and backdrop to make the food brighter
- No strong shadows, no hard light
- No flashlight
🧱 Light Background
Light and simple texture background (white marble, concrete, cement)
Or solid bright color background
⚠️ATTENTION:
Do not use dark and rustic backgrounds with heavily defined patterns, such as dark wood.
The background needs to be the same during the photoshoot
Avoid moving the background or capture photos from different angles of the background
Single Dish
🍛 Single dish photos are composed of a single main dish centered
in the frame captured at 0 or 90°.
📐 Angles
90° (top view) or 0° (front view) depending on the type of food/product.
General dishes, pizza, pasta, traditional cuisines, etc (...) at 90° (top view)
Drinks, coffee, and cakes at 45°
Burgers, sushi, drinks, packaged products, etc (...) at 0° (front view), use a vertical background if necessary
🎯 Capture instructions
Preferably using round plates rather than square ones as this creates a more symmetrical image
Take images without restaurant packaging to make them look more appealing
Avoid accessories, cutlery, or props, the food is the star of the photo
Take horizontal/landscape orientation images
Make sure to clearly show the ingredients, especially for burgers, sandwiches, and rolls (you can open the sandwiches to perform the shoot)
Avoid placing the food directly on the background, always use a plate or a napkin
Capture in the photo, the item that the consumer will receive
if the photo illustrates a menu, capture in the frame all the elements of the menu
if the photo illustrates a side dish, include only the side item (e.g; fries)
Tip: Ask for the names of the dishes, you will need it when you name your file
Dish Composition (hero)
